(Bloomberg) -- Murata Manufacturing Co., a key component supplier to the world's smartphone market, reported Thursday an increase in operating profit to 52.4 billion yen ($492 million) in the quarter ending March 31. The company outdid its year-earlier results, which were 41.7 billion yen, underscoring industry optimism for 5G demand offsetting the impact of Covid-19 on the global economy. Murata forecast a decline in revenue and profit for the current fiscal year due to the virus. The Kyoto-based firm provides various key components, such as chip capacitors, batteries and circuit boards to top handset makers, including Apple Inc. and Huawei Technologies Co. Its performance often serves as a bellwether for the mobile industry's production outlook, as the orders it receives are an indicator of device manufacturers' planned manufacturing volume. Samsung forecasts solid chip sales but profits will drop due to decline in smartphone and TV sales

Image
(Reuters) — Samsung said on Wednesday it expected profit to decline in the current quarter due to a coronavirus-related slump in sales of smartphones and TVs, although the chip business would remain solid. The South Korean conglomerate joined other tech giants such as SK Hynix and Intel in declining to provide annual forecasts because of the uncertainty about the duration of the pandemic. It said that while work-from-home orders and the related growth in online learning would underpin demand for memory chips, the outlook for smartphones and TVs was bleak as consumers put off discretionary spending. "Even as such uncertainties persist, overall conditions in the memory industry are likely to be favorable due to server and PC demand," Han Jin-man, senior vice president at Samsung's chip business, said during a conference call. Oppo Find X2 Pro review: supercar smartphone

Image
If you want a quick way to illustrate just how good Chinese phones have gotten in the past couple of years, try comparing the Oppo Find X2 Pro to its predecessor. 2018's Find X was a technically ambitious device that paired a still-unique motorized sliding design with a still-uncommon 3D face unlock system and wonky software. The Find X2 Pro does none of that stuff. Instead, it's just an incredibly good phone. Make no mistake, Oppo is aiming straight for Samsung's heart here. The €1,099 ($1,180) Find X2 Pro competes with the high-end Galaxy S20 phones on design, speed, features, cameras, and price, and in many regards I think it comes out on top. If you live in a country with a competitive market for Android phones — i.e., not the US — it should be taken very seriously, even though for me it has a single deal-breaking flaw. As is often the case with Oppo flagship phones, the Find X2 Pro shares much in common with the latest high-end OnePlus model, due to the two...

UPDATE 1-Japan's SMFG SBI to form smartphone service tie-up

Image
TOKYO (Reuters) - Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc will tie up with internet brokerage SBI Holdings in a smartphone service business, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Monday, adding the two firms are expected to reach an agreement this week. SMFG in June will acquire a 20% stake in SBI NeoMobile Securities, a online brokerage specialized for smartphones, which is worth a few billion yen, the Nikkei said. SMFG is also considering a capital tie-up with SBI Holdings, the Nikkei reported. A SBI spokesman declined to comment. SMFG could not be reached for comment immediately. The move comes as Japanese banks have been struggling to profit under a policy of aggressive monetary easing that has seen the central bank guide short-term rates toward minus 0.1% and the 10-year government bond yield to around 0%. The Bank of Japan expanded monetary stimulus on Monday and pledged to buy unlimited amount of bonds to keep borrowing costs low as the government tries to spend its way out of the deepe...

© Provided by The Financial Express India smartphone market: Device shipments up 4% in Jan-March, says Counterpoint © Provided by The Financial Express While the smartphone market registered an annual growth in Q1, the feature phone market saw a decline of around 24% y-o-y during the same period implying consumers are transitioning to smartphones. (Represnetative image) Smartphone shipments in India rose a modest 4% y-o-y to around 31 million units in January-March this calendar year (CY) as the quarter witnessed launches and promotions during the first two months, while the nationwide lockdown in last week of March due to Covid-19 outbreak impacted shipments, Counterpoint Research said. "January and February shipments grew annually due to new launches and aggressive promotions. However, a steep annual decline in March (-19%) due to Covid-19 outbreak restricted overall quarter growth to just 4%," the research firm pointed out. Sin...

LG's stylish Velvet smartphone is arriving in early May

Image
LG has been teasing its new Velvet smartphone for a few weeks now, and thanks to a new teaser video, we know exactly when it's launching: May 7.  The video (below) doesn't reveal anything new about the phone, and it's once again focused on its "raindrop" rear camera design, in which the camera lenses are positioned as to resemble rain drops.  The video comes from LG Korea, so it's possible that the May 7 refers to the launch in Korea; there's no word on an international launch just yet.  In a previous teaser video, LG has shown the phone from all sides, and revealed some of its specs; namely, the Snapdragon 765 chipset with 5G connectivity. The phone's headphone jack is also visible in the video.  The Velvet smartphone is an important new direction for LG, whose smartphone sales haven't been great...well, ever. The company is shedding the complicated naming schemes of yesteryear (such as the LG V60 ThinQ) and focusing on simpler brand...

Zoom’s encryption update is like ‘skipping two generations on a smartphone upgrade’

Image
Sorry, Zoom eavesdroppers.  Zoom announced Wednesday that its version 5.0 update will add some security upgrades that privacy-minded "Zoomers" will appreciate. Most significantly, Zoom is improving the encryption standard that it uses, which makes call data more resistant to getting intercepted. Encryption has been a big issue for Zoom since The Intercept uncovered that its claims about having end-to-end encryption were not accurate; that its encryption standards were subpar; and that some data was even getting routed through China, which critics said could open it up to government interference.  Now, Zoom is upgrading from employing 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) keys to providing support for a more complicated and secure standard, called AES 256-bit GCM encryption. Grant McCormick, the chief information officer at security firm Exabeam, called the change a "significant improvement," and explained that consumers can "think of it as skipping t...

The OnePlus 8 Pro also comes with an IP 68 rating which means the innards of the phone have to be tightly packed as well.  © JerryRigEverything The smartphone's teardown shows the OnePlus 8 Pro has a very neat and almost artistic design even from the inside. It shows that OnePlus designed the inside of the smartphone keeping everything in mind and with good planning.  The smartphone was not easy to open because the back panel was helped by a strong adhesive, something OnePlus may have decided to use for the IP 68 rating.  The phone is rated for water resistance which means the design of the sma...

Can smartphone apps track COVID-19 without violating your privacy?

Image
© Pexels Contact tracing apps could help prevent second and third waves of the coronavirus once social distancing rules loosen up across the country. In California, early signs have begun to appear that the state's swift and aggressive social distancing measures have slowed the spread of COVID-19. Now, the city of San Francisco is assembling a task force to prevent the disease from surging back once they relax stay-at-home orders. They plan to do so by tracking down everyone who has come into contact with those who test positive for COVID-19. This technique, known as contact tracing, will be necessary across the United States to tamp down transmission levels until a vaccine comes along; a similar effort is already ramping up in Massachusetts. However, traditional contact tracing is time and labor-intensive, and will be difficult for public health officials to enact on the scale needed across the country. It also depends on people's ability to remember eve...

Coronavirus prompts Samsung to cut smartphone production in half

Image
Samsung will see its smartphone production fall by more than 50% in April due to the coronavirus. Some of Samsung's biggest factories in countries like Brazil and India have been closed for weeks. The smartphone industry on the whole is reeling and there's no telling when demand will return to pre-coronavirus levels. Visit BGR's homepage for more stories. Samsung's smartphone production is poised to drop by more than 50% this month on account of the coronavirus pandemic. The South Korean tech giant, which typically manufactures 25 million handsets in April, will see that figure drop down to around 10 million units according to a report from The Elec. That's an astounding 60% decline, to be precise, and the resulting sales drop-off will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the company's bottom line. There are a few factors in play here worth mentioning. For starters, Samsung three weeks ago shut down a...

Image
© Provided by BGR.in Honor 30 and Honor 30 Pro smartphones were launched by Huawei's e-brand yesterday. As it has become a tradition, the smartphone packs identical specifications to the Huawei P40 flagship without any big branding. One area where Honor 30 series is identical is in the camera department. It packs a similar camera system without the much coveted Leica branding. If you have any doubts then look no further than the DxOMark ranking. According to DxOMark, Honor 30 Pro+ is the second best camera smartphone in the market. With a score of 125, it fell short of matching Huawei P40 Pro by just three months. It is also ahead of Oppo Find X2 and Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro by one point. The overall ranking is subject to testing conditions but it shouldn't be surprising since Huawei and its Honor sub-brand have been doing well in the camera department for quite sometime now. Let's start with the camera setup on the Honor 30 Pro+. The smartphone features a...

LG announces its upcoming smartphone called Velvet

Image
LG Velvet has been announced to be the first smartphone that will adopt the South Korean company's new design language. In a press statement, LG has announced that it is "embarking on a new product roadmap" with Velvet at the frontier. It will be a major departure from the company's alphanumeric nomenclature for its smartphone, more so because LG thinks "familiar and expressive" names will " help the consumer capture the essence of the device best suited for his or her personality and ever-changing trends." Last week, LG unveiled that it is introducing a new design language for its upcoming smartphones. The design includes a "rainbow" camera, 3D Arc Design, and a sleek footprint that LG's upcoming smartphones will be loaded with to mark distinction among other smartphones. As for Velvet, LG says it "is intended to evoke images of lustrous smoothness and premium softness." An LG Velvet logo has also be...

Smartphone maker Xiaomi says China sales already close to full recovery

Image
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Corp is seeing signs of a sales recovery in China, it said on Tuesday, as the country starts to return to normal following the coronavirus lockdown. "The (Chinese) market has entered a full recovery stage, and... has already recovered to 80 to 90% of the normal level," Chief Financial Officer Shou Zi Chew said on an earnings call. He said sales in China fell in the first quarter due to the economic impact of the virus, but did not say by how much. Chew said he expected demand for smartphones to be resilient globally even though the virus was spreading to other countries. The company will take a hit in global sales during March and April, he said, but expects to see signs of recovery in May. "If we take reference from China's experience, I think smartphone demand is resilient," said Chew. "I think it will rebound quickly." Xiaomi reported on Tuesday a 27% jump in revenue for October-December 2019, abo...

LG teases 'Raindrop' camera design for mysterious upcoming smartphone

Image
LG LG is teasing a new, minimalistic design for an unnamed upcoming smartphone. The refreshed design is inspired by "the natural world" and features something the company calls the "Raindrop" camera module. Unlike the huge square and rectangular camera bumps we're seeing on phones these days, LG's design actually seems pleasant to look at. The back of the mystery LG phone features a triple camera array accompanied by an LED flash. The arrangement of the cameras in descending order of size resembles a falling raindrop. LG notes that the main camera is slightly raised while the other two sit flush with the body of the phone. Another element that LG is introducing to the new phone is something it calls the "3D Arc" design. This basically refers to the curved edges of the front and rear, a lot like the waterfall screens we've been seeing lately. LG "This handset will be a first-look at the competitive edge we will be bringing to every LG smart...

LG teases design rendering of next flagship smartphone

Image
LG Electronics unveiled the design rendering of its upcoming flagship smartphone on Thursday, with the device expected to be launched in South Korea next month. The new model has what LG calls a "falling raindrops" design, where its three rear cameras and LED flash are placed in descending order by size. The main camera will sit above the surface while the remaining two cameras will be under the coverglass to avoid the camera bumps, LG said. The sides of the phone will be symmetrically curved, the company added. LG has yet to announce the official specifications of the new handset, but previously said it would be a "mass premium" model, hinting at the device being launched at a more affordable price range compared to other vendors' flagship smartphones. The new smartphone will also bear a new name, shedding the G branding that has been used f...

Android 11 could force all smartphone OEMs to adopt seamless updates

Image
New Android 11 phones could make the software update process way more efficient and secure. According to evidence discovered by an XDA recognized developer, Google could make it mandatory for all new Android 11 phones to feature Seamless Updates. What are Seamless Updates? Seamless updates were introduced by Google on Android Nougat. They ensure that a workable booting system remains on the disk during an OTA update by creating virtual A/B partition structures. When your phone receives an over-the-air update, Android's Seamless Updates feature will patch an inactive partition in the background while an active partition with the existing software keeps running in the foreground. Here are the first phones to get GPU driver updates via Play Store (Update) Update, March 25 2020 (1:50AM ET): Qualcomm has confirmed more GPU driver update details, and it looks like you shouldn't expect these updates to arrive every month. "Qualcomm is committing to a quarterly cadence for release...
