Revamped PLI Scheme Aims to Boost Local Smartphone Manufacturing in India

Image
© Provided by News18 Revamped PLI Scheme Aims to Boost Local Smartphone Manufacturing in India Smartphone manufacturing in India is being seen as a big avenue going forward, and the government of India is making a few changes to enable that. At the top of the charts is a revision of the existing production-linked incentive scheme for smartphone manufacturers, where an empowered committee has decided that it will no longer evaluate manufacturing plant and machinery brought into India by a brand at just 40 percent of its value. Revealed in a report by The Economic Times, this was one of the clauses to which Apple had raised an objection to. Now, the government is reportedly in discussion with manufacturers such as Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron to attempt to move some of their manufacturing activities over to India. Interestingly, the government committee that made the above change on Friday also voted to begin involving industry players in meetings and discussions...

Smartphone tool helps users keep social distance

Image
Smartphone users have a new way to keep their distance -- a tool that lets them know when people are getting closer than pandemic guidelines recommend. The Google-developed Sodar tool available this week taps into Android smartphone cameras to put users in the center of a white circle with a radius of about two meters, or 6.5 feet. The perimeter, determined based on pandemic social distancing guidelines, is made using the same kind of augmented reality technology in smartphone games such as Pokemon Go. Circles superimposed on surroundings move with users, keeping smartphones in the center. Users get a visual warning when they are within the potentially hazardous radius. Sodar works through Google-made Chrome browsers on Android smartphones that support augmented reality, according to the California-based internet firm. "This experiment uses (the application program interface) WebXR to visualize 2-meter social-distancing guidelines in your environment," a message at the websit...

Qualcomm Likely to Sell Smartphone Chips to Huawei Analyst Says

Image
Text size Qualcomm could be the surprise winner in the U.S. government's latest crackdown on supplying critical technology infrastructure to the Chinese telecom equipment company Huawei Technologies. KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst John Vinh makes that point in a research note Thursday as he raised his rating on Qualcomm shares (ticker: QCOM). The government recently issued new rules that will make it difficult for Huawei's chip manufacturing arm, HiSilicon, to get access to U.S. semiconductor manufacturing hardware. Vinh argues that as a result, Huawei won't be able to use HiSilicon to source chipsets for its cutting-edge smartphones in 2021—and that the company will instead use Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset in its flagship phones, the Mate 50 and P50. ...

Arizona sues Google over claims it illegally collected location data from smartphone users even after they opted out

Image
Arizona has filed a lawsuit against Google accusing it of illegally collecting smartphone users' location data, attorney general Mark Brnovich said in a press release on Wednesday. The lawsuit claims Google violated Arizona's consumer fraud laws by tracking users' locations even when they had disabled location tracking settings and demands Google repay any money it made as a result. "The Attorney General and the contingency fee lawyers filing this lawsuit appear to have mischaracterized our services," a Google spokesperson said in a statement to Business Insider. "We have always built privacy features into our products and provided robust controls for location data." Google has repeatedly come under fire for how it collects and uses data, both in the US and globally. The company could also soon face two additional lawsuits, one from state attorneys general and another from the DOJ, as probes into the company's ad and search ...

Video: Six DIY smartphone camera rigs made from household objects

Image
The Cooperative of Photography, better known as COOPH, has released its latest YouTube video showing how to make the most of your smartphone footage by creating six different smartphone rigs using materials you likely have sitting around at home. As you would expect for these rather primitive homemade solutions, the DIY rigs aren't necessarily aesthetically pleasing but based on the resulting footage, hopefully your video will be. The six-minute video covers how to make a DIY gimbal, a DIY timelapse rig, a DIY stabilizer, a DIY automated slider, a DIY 'spinning' rig and a DIY Gorillapod-style tripod. It's quite the adventure, but considering there's a good chance you're still on some sort of lockdown or stay-at-home order, these DIY projects might be just what you need to keep your creative spirit alive in seclusion. You can find more videos from COOPH on their YouTube channel. ...

Xiaomi files patent for foldable smartphone with rotating quad-camera

Image
After Samsung's successful take on the folding phone with the Galaxy Fold line up and the recent Galaxy Z Flip, it seems Xiaomi is ready to jump onto the next big smartphone trend, folding phones. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has patented the design of a foldable smartphone. The patent for an inward bending phone has been filed in China. One of the interesting aspects of the new patent is that there is a quad-camera system that rotates forward for selfies and back for regular photos. While many smartphones companies have used this mechanism in the past, this will be a first for folding phones. The smartphone maker has also put 48 images to showcase the handset, reports GizmoChina. The patent images show a flexible screen with no notches or cutouts. The phone folds inwards, protecting the display. There are no signs of a secondary display and the chin rotating camera module is at the top, making the phone look like an upside-down Moto Razr. ...

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi reports 13.6% rise in first-quarter revenue

Image
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Xiaomi Corp reported a 13.6% rise in first-quarter revenue on Wednesday, beating estimates, as the Chinese smartphone maker sold more phones and benefited from sales of its higher-priced 5G models. The company managed to boost sales despite the impact of the coronavirus, which rattled supply chains and dampened overall smartphone demand. "Our production in mainland China has largely resumed, and smartphone demand has rebounded quickly," the company said in its first-quarter earnings release. Xiaomi's optimism stands in contrast to rivals Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, which have both warned of a tough year ahead. Sales in the first quarter of 2020 rose to 49.7 billion yuan ($7.00 billion) from 43.76 billion yuan in the same period prior year, beating analyst expectations of 47.86 billion yuan. The company attributed the jump to rising prices for its just-released 5G phones in China, as well as growing sales overseas. Profits fell by rough...

The OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone̢۪s infrared camera is accidentally creepy

When OnePlus announced its 8 Pro smartphone, it included details about a curious camera that it calls the Color Filter camera. In reality, it's an infrared (IR) camera that can pick up a part of the spectrum that your eye—and most commercial digital cameras—can't. This gives the photos a unique, if slightly odd, look, especially after the phone has added some processing to it. Under normal circumstances, the resulting images look different and unique. Under some circumstances, however, an infrared camera will give you a glimpse of whatever happens to be under a layer of material. © OnePlus The OnePlus website offers this see-through view of the actual 8 Pro camera modules. LG's conceptual images reveal a new smartphone design with a unique dual-screen system that forms a T-shape. This is according to reports from South Korean publications Herald Corp and ETNews. The smartphone, codenamed "Wing", sports a standard primary display that, when the device is unfolded, sits horizontally at the top of the unfolded device. The second display is reportedly a four-inch square shape and completes the device's unfolded T-shape by forming the base of the 'T.' It is not clear what the purpose of the device's design would be, although the design implies that it would allow users to do multitask more efficiently. For example, users would possible be able to stream video games on the large display, while reading comments on the square screen. Alternatively, for gaming, the square screen could be used to provide gamepad touch controls, while the large display could display the actual game. Just a design It is important to not...

Indian smartphone users don't believe in megapixel hype; they want better selfie cameras says survey

Image
One might think that the increasing megapixel count on the smartphone camera influences consumer purchase decision. However, CMR Insights on Go Survey suggests that 79 per cent of the consumers in this price segment of sub-Rs 30,000 believe that image quality is not dependent on megapixel count. Five in every six smartphone users in the price band of Rs 20,000-30,0000 hold this belief. Instead of the megapixel count, consumers are more concerned about the quality of the front camera in their quest to get the perfect selfie. Consumers accord more importance to selfie quality. Interestingly, smartphones in the sub-Rs 30,000 price band constitute one of the most prominent price segments where 85 per cent of India's consumers make their smartphone purchase. Prabhu Ram, Head- Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR, says, "What the survey insights provide us with, is a compelling picture of a classic conundrum. While smartphone brands focus on increasing the megapixel capabilities o...

The Fairphone ethical smartphone is now available with the Google-less Android /e/OS operating system

Almost all smartphones lock you into expensive, pretty prisons. They look great, but you can't repair them, and they watch your every move. But now there's the Fairphone 3, which lets you fix the hardware yourself, paired up with the privacy-first Android /e/OS operating system. Besides being repairable by any handy person, the Fairphone uses ethically sourced materials and is built by well-paid workers, Many smartphones, such as the Apple iPhone, are built by poorly paid temporary workers.  The Android-based /e/ operating system and smartphones put privacy first. It's based on LineageOS. This is an Android-based operating system, which is descended from the failed CyanogenMod Android fork. This version also blends in features from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) 7, 8, and 9 source-code trees.  In the /e/OS, all Google services have been removed and ...
