Do you still have TikTok other banned Chinese apps on your smartphone? Here is what you should do

Image
In an unprecedented move, the government of India on Monday banned 59 Chinese apps, including some big names like TikTok, SHAREit and UC Browser. The move came in the wake of India-China clash at the Galwan Valley that claimed the lives of several Indian soldiers at the LAC. These apps were used extensively in India for entertainment and other purposes. Why these apps were banned?  The information technology ministry, which issued Monday evening's ban order, had cited concerns that the 59 applications are 'prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order'. The banned applications have been removed from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for India. The applications banned by the government include Club Factory, SHAREit, Likee, Mi Video Call (Xiaomi), Weibo, Baidu and Bigo Live. You Won't See These Three Android 11 Features On Every Smartphone

Image
Google released the first public beta for Android 11 earlier this month, and now we're starting to see which features will be brought to every Android devices and which will not be available. This information is according to the CDD (Compatibility Definition Document) which Google sends out to all of its partners. This document basically tells partners which features and parts of the OS that they have to integrate, and which they are strongly encouraged too, or which they should not implement. There are three specific features that are not labeled as "MUST" implement, according to the latest version of the CDD, which XDA has acquired. It is worth mentioning that these could change between now and when Android 11 launches in Q3 (likely September). As some of these have changed since the first developer preview already. The three features that we are referring to are: Device Controls, Conversations in Notifications and IdentityCredential – Mobile Driver's Licenses. The ...

Ukraine: Trapped in a War Zone for Lacking a Smartphone

Image
Mandated Use of Covid-19 Tracking App Leaves People Trapped (Kyiv) – Dozens of people are stranded in a "gray zone" between the warring parties in eastern Ukraine, unable to cross the line separating areas controlled by the government from those controlled by Russia-backed armed groups, Human Rights Watch said today. Ukraine reopened these checkpoints on June 10, 2020 after closing them for almost three months in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. But under Covid-19 restrictions, the government requires people crossing to download an app to monitor compliance with self-isolation orders, denying entry to anyone who doesn't have a smartphone. Russia-backed armed groups in the Donetsk region have turned back many people attempting to cross into areas they control and have forced those who leave to sign documents saying they will not return until the public health situation has improved. Ukrainian authorities should stop requiring people to download the monito...

COVID-19 fuels a drop in new smartphone sales an upswing for recycled phones

Image
Coronavirus-led shutdown of key manufacturing plants in China and consumer financial concerns fuel interest in pre-owned phone sales, according to a Gartner report. Among its many results, the coronavirus has put a damper on first-adopters, some of whom, pre-pandemic, would be the first in line to buy the new iPhone SE in September. But new smartphone sales dropped 20.2% for the first quarter of 2020 (Q1 2020), according to a new report from Gartner.  SEE: Mobile device computing policy (TechRepublic Premium) While edicts to shelter-at-home and the cloud of economic uncertainty affected the sales of new smartphones, recycled phones are on the upswing (by 24%). A recycled or refurbished phone is generally one that has been traded or sold so the owner can upgrade to the new version or a "better" phone. Gartner's report,...

India's top smartphone maker Xiaomi says growing anti-China sentiment has not affected business

Image
Growing anti-China sentiment in India has not had any material impact on Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi, the company's India boss said on Thursday. In the last six years, Xiaomi India built a strong local culture and company, managing director Manu Kumar Jain told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia." "Our product team, R&D teams are here in India. As we have mentioned, all (of ) our phones, majority of our TVs are made in India, large number of components are locally sourced ... entire leadership team is in India," Jain said. "Till now, we are not seeing any major impact on our business, with respect to sales or demand," he added. Xiaomi is India's top smartphone maker and owns about 30% of the market currently, according to data from Counterpoint Research. In fact, apart from Samsung, the rest of the top five phone makers in the Indian market are Chinese firms. Relations between New Delhi and Beijing deteriorated in recent weeks due to a border c...

Indiana Supreme Court rules for woman who refused police demands to unlock smartphone

Image
The Indiana Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that a woman who refused to unlock her phone with her passcode for police during a criminal investigation is protected by the U.S. Constitution. The court's decision reversed a contempt order against 29-year-old Katelin Seo of Carmel, which is about 20 miles north of Indianapolis. An Apple iPhone5s held in one hand showing its screen with numpad for entering the passcode. (iStock) The court determined that forcing her to unlock her iPhone for police would violate the Fifth Amendment, the Indianapolis Star reported. "By unlocking her smartphone, Seo would provide law enforcement with information it does not already know, which the State could then use in its prosecution against her," the court said. Seo was charged with harassment and stalking in 2017. Hamilton County authorities wanted the passcode to her iPhone 7. Her attorney William Webster, argued that by unlocking her phone for police, she would essentially be...

Intelligence Brief: Is 5G a smartphone lifeline?

Image
As countries around the world ease pandemic-related restrictions on consumers and businesses, it is abundantly clear operators and smartphone vendors now inhabit a fundamentally changed economic landscape. Covid-19 (coronavirus) sent shockwaves through every sector of the economy, and while it has been better insulated than some, the telecom industry will inevitably feel the effects of the 3 per cent global GDP contraction the IMF predicts for this year. Operators and smartphone vendors are now facing the ominous dual prospects of a severe global recession and a prolonged slump for traditional in-store retail, where most phones were sold before the pandemic. Through the economic gloom, there is nevertheless some good news for smartphone manufacturers. At a basic level, lockdowns have, if anything, further demonstrated the critical importance of mobile devices for enabling eve...

Global Mobile Handset Market Outlook to 2024: 5G Marketing Campaigns and Camera-related Improvements will Help the Smartphone Segment Recover after COVID-19 ...

Image
DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "Global Mobile Handset Market, Forecast to 2024" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering. In 2019, approximately 2.08 billion mobile handsets were shipped globally. Year-over-year smartphone sales declines are forecast over the next 2-3 years due to longer replacement cycles and fewer overall product innovations, although intense 5G-related marketing efforts will facilitate the segment's return to growth. Smart feature phones' growth will be driven by carrier subsidies to get developing regions online after-sales spikes in 2017 and 2018. Features phones will register deteriorating sales as smartphone prices drop and as customers expect greater functionality. The high market share concentration among the top 3 vendors-Samsung, Apple, and Huawei-will make it difficult for new participants to enter and will also erode existing companies' margins. While direct-to-consumer sales works well for ...

Boycotting Chinese goods? Be prepared to pay more for your next smartphone TV car other items

Image
© Provided by The Financial Express Boycotting Chinese goods? Be prepared to pay more for your next smartphone, TV, car, other items © Provided by The Financial Express While the anti-China sentiment is high across the country, especially for made in China products, a boycott, and an immediate one at that is far from feasible. Firstly, if the government buckles under the pressure of the rising chorus to boycott Chinese products by raising import duties on them, it is the consumers who will feel the hardest pinch as prices will increase for a host of items ranging from mobile phones, smart TVs to cars. Even if several of these products are manufactured in the country, their components are either imported from China or the vendors of the final products are dependent on China for their supply. Industry executives agree that in several cases alternatives can be sourced or domestic capabilities can be created, but these would take time. For inst...

IRS tried (unsuccessfully) to use smartphone location data to find tax criminals

Image
A new report details how the IRS bought mountains of anonymized smartphone data with the intention of using it to catch criminals. However, the IRS location data investigations proved fruitless and the organization ceased the practice. This likely won't be the last time, though, that the IRS (or other government organizations) uses phone data to try to catch criminals. According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tried to use smartphone location data to nab tax criminals. The IRS location data methodology, though, proved ineffective. The report describes how the IRS allegedly paid a third-party data firm for mountains of United States citizens' location data. The intention was to use that data to catch people who have committed tax crimes. However, after a year of paying to obtain the data, the IRS did not renew its contract with the service since it hadn't caught a single criminal through the data access. What the IRS was tryin...

Forget Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 This Is The Smartphone To Buy

Image
Leak after leak has revealed stunning details about Samsung's imminent Galaxy Note 20+ (potentially Ultra). But now we know the smart money should run a million miles from the Galaxy Note 20. And this is why. MORE FROM FORBESSamsung Insider Reveals Galaxy Note 20 Release DateBy Gordon Kelly In a series of updates, prolific Samsung insider Ice Universe has revealed the Galaxy Note 20 is a shocking hollow shell of a smartphone which the leaker believes is not even worthy of its name. And, if he's correct, he's right. "Wide frame + flat screen + FHD resolution + 60Hz refresh rate. It's a desperate specification," he states, adding: "Note20 ≈ Note20 Lite, its specifications are far from Note20 Ultra" and most damningly: "I think its comprehensive specifications are even lower than Note10, at least Note10 is still curved screen and narrow bezel." 2020 chipset aside, Ice Universe has a point. In addition to its more premium design, the...

Detecting antibodies with glowing proteins thread and a smartphone

Image
To defend the body, the immune system makes proteins known as antibodies that latch onto the perceived threat, be it HIV, the new coronavirus or, as is the case in autoimmune disease, part of the body itself. In a new proof-of-concept study in ACS Sensors, researchers describe a new system for detecting antibodies within a pinprick of blood within minutes, using an unlikely combination of cotton thread, glowing proteins and a smartphone camera.  While some tests simply detect the presence of an antibody, sometimes doctors want to know how much is circulating in the blood. Such quantitative tests are used to diagnose a number of conditions, including infections and autoimmune diseases. Although a quantitative antibody test is not yet approved for use in the U.S., such a test could potentially aid in assessing immunity to SARS-CoV-2. However, quantitative testing current...

Huawei takes top spot in smartphone market share for first time

Image
Huawei's smartphone market share overtook Samsung in April, becoming the world's largest smartphone maker for the first time, data from market research company Counterpoint showed. Huawei's smartphone market share increased as the Chinese market stabilized, Counterpoint said, and the figure saw a jump from 17 percent in March to 21.4 percent in April. It was mainly driven by Huawei's strong presence in the Chinese market, which has steadily recovered since March. China's market contributed 76 percent to Huawei's total sales in April 2020. Samsung, on the other hand, saw its market share decline to 19.1 percent due to a complete lockdown in India and lower demand for the S20 Series amid the COVID-19 epidemic. Overall, global smartphone shipments in April were 69.37 million units, down 41 percent year-on-year, due to lockdowns across various countries, Counterpoint said. In April, smartphone shipments in China rose 17.2 percent on a yearly basis, the first such ex...

India online smartphone share to touch record 45% in 2020: Report

Image
New Delhi: Online channels are likely to account for a highest-ever 45 per cent share of smartphone sales in 2020 owing to the Covid-19 situation as people would prefer to buy devices online to maintain social distancing, a new report has said. Among the online channels, Flipkart is likely to hold top position while Amazon will grow the fastest. "Xiaomi is likely to lead the online brand rankings while Realme will be the fastest-growing brand in the online space in 2020," according to the latest report from Counterpoint Research. In Q1 2020, Flipkart led the overall online market with a 50 per cent share but its shipments declined 7 per cent (YoY). However, Amazon grew in Q1 2020 with a 3 per cent (YoY) growth. "The Covid-19 crisis had little impact in the March-ending quarter. However, during the lockdown, the market has come to an almost complete standstill, massively impacting all aspects of the smartphone market including both online and offline channels," sa...

Android 11 will add a recycle bin to your smartphone

Image
© Provided by TechRadar Google Pixel 4 The Android 11 public beta is out and available for anyone to try – anyone with a compatible phone, that is – and we're seeing a steady stream of new features come to light. The latest is a potentially very useful recycle bin for recovering deleted files. As noted by 9to5Google, this trash folder has apparently been around since the developer preview launched in February, but it's largely flown under the radar until now. It works exactly as you think it might, in the classic Windows Recycle Bin or macOS Trash folder tradition: files and photos you delete aren't fully deleted for a period of 30 days, giving you a window of opportunity to bring them back. That's a significant improvement from the current way that Android works, where files deleted from the local storage are immediately wiped and can't be recovered unless you have a backup somewhere. It'll be a reassuring safety net if you happen to a...

How a smartphone coupled with machine learning may become a simple efficient test for COVID-19

Image
"Testing in the United States is a mess" wrote the editors of Nature magazine recently, addressing a series of missteps that have led to a serious shortfall in the country's ability to detect COVID-19.  "With shambolic coordination at the national level, existing providers have become swamped, testing backlogs have lengthened and shortages of swabs, supplies and reagents have grown," observed the editors.  The disaster of US testing for COVID-19 opens the way for novel approaches to diagnosing the disease, some of which may get emergency-use approval from the US Food & Drug Administration if they show promise. Enter the smartphone. The camera on the average smartphone is powerful enough to capture substantial information from the appearance of fluid in a genetic test. Coupled with deep learning computer programs,...

40 million Android users need to delete THIS app from their smartphone ...or pay the price

Image
Android smartphone owners are pretty accustomed to warnings from security researchers. Despite Google's best efforts, malware, ransomware and fleeceware keep managing to sneak into the Play Store. And because of the vast popularity of Android, these apps soon find an audience. And with the latest app highlighted by researchers, that audience is astonishingly large. Known as SnapTube, the Android app sells itself as an easy way to download videos from YouTube and Facebook – and has been downloaded more than 40 million times. SnapTube is free to download. But that doesn't mean it isn't costing you. According to a new report from UpStreamSystems, users with SnapTube installed on their smartphone could find themselves paying dearly. That's because the simple download app quietly signs up users for premium services without their knowledge. This practice is known as "fleeceware", which is when developers abuse the ability for apps to begin charging users a subscript...

Covid-19 disruption: India to miss projected smartphone sales for 2020

Image
NEW DELHI: India's smartphones sales for this year will likely miss the projected target of 162 million units by a shade over a fifth because of the disruption caused by covid-19 and the ensuing lockdown, research firm techARC reports in its revised market forecast. Basic and mid-segment smartphones, priced at ₹5,001-25,000, will continue to account for over 92% of total sales. Shipments in the entry segment--below ₹5,000--will fall, while the luxe segment-- ₹50,000 and above--will remain unaffected. Many buyers are expected to shift to lower priced smartphones due to financial uncertainties brought on by covid-19. The top five smartphone companies-- Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo and Realme-- will only take a mild hit though as they were quick to adapt to the changing market dynamics. As many offline retail channel remained closed due to partial lockdown in places, top smartphone vendors have started using O2O (online to offline) models, where de...
